"It was a joy to get out round the village on a couple of warm, early spring days to research these routes," says David, who's part of the small steering group that's producing the new map. "Nevertheless," he says, "it did raise one or two eyebrows when I was spotted going round the village with my OS Explorer map and notebook!" All of these walks are on David's local patch, and he walks some sections of the routes more or less every day. But, despite knowing the walks well, David explains that you can't just sit at the desk and write them up. "You simply don't notice the details on the way to the pub or the post office," he says - "things like road signs, and what it says on the signposts. "It's vital to get that kind of detail right when you're describing a route for people who may be new to the area. Otherwise, they'd soon loose confidence in the product." |
